<p><strong>Video description </strong>: The very abundant literature output of Russel Belk started in 1966 and has been reflected so far in 684 publications (Google Scholar, 2023). He has not only been one of the major contributors to consumer research but he is also a generator of ideas and an inspiration for other researchers all over the world (<em>e.g.</em> Belk (1988), quoted 5887 times). With qualitative approaches, ethnography and videography, he has been covering a broad spectrum of topics on consumption, consumer culture and consumer behavior and introduced many meta-concepts in the fields of identity, possessions, desire or sharing. The objective of this contribution is to dismantle Russel&rsquo;s hot topics and their evolution over time but also to analyze the impact of his research through his huge academic work among different readers. On the one hand, we analyze the bibliometric archives of his publications: we retrace the emergence of the research themes and concepts that have driven his publications over time by analyzing them (seriously!) with the technological tools of automated text analysis. Russel&rsquo;s work is then deconstructed by using a software program and the results are captivating. On the other hand, we explore, in a special bonus section, what other actors (AI and SSH researchers, PhD students) have to say (sometimes less seriously!) about his investigations and especially about the role of Belk&rsquo;s work in their careers. The whole contribution provides a legacy of an abundant scholar and insights into the evolution of consumer research. It can also serve as a useful condensed overview for young scholars as they embark on research adventures. We aim to present our findings in a serious but nevertheless entertaining video, in line with the festive atmosphere of the conference.</p>

		<title>Navigating the Shadow of Death: Vital Possessions of Marginalized Consumers</title>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Abstract</strong> : Possessions are found to carry meaning throughout life. We examine the roles for possessions when consumers are living with the threat of death. More specifically, we examine the role of possessions for the severely disadvantaged urban consumers who are deprived of most consumer options as they navigate life-threatening diagnoses. Our research questions are twofold: What are the valued possessions of these consumers? How do they use them as a lifeline? Based on in-depth interviews with three socioeconomically challenged HIV positive consumers, we expand our prior understanding of Belk’s (1988) extended self. We identify four approaches individuals employ through vital possessions:  inter-personal, intra-personal, compensatory, and sublimating extension of the self. These vital possessions function as a means of coping particularly when individuals are devoid of intimate relationships and empathetic social support.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Abstract : We live in an era of cultural abundance in which cultural products and opportunities to consume them are more numerous than ever before (Glévarec, 2021). The profound changes in the cultural industries induced by the dematerialization of cultural goods have led to the emergence of gigantic cultural “platforms” that give easy access (Belk, 2014) to collections of cultural products of unprecedented. Further, French society has a long history of cultural policies aimed at reducing social discrepancies in cultural participation (Bellon, 2016; Esclatine, 2013; Zask, 2016). Despite such abundance, such access and such political efforts, there is a lack of diversity consumed on these platforms and on the physical market (Donnat, 2018a, 2018b), and cultural participation in France still reveals social discrepancies (Lombardo &amp; Wolff, 2020). The existing literature on cultural consumption doesn’t sufficiently account for these issues.<a href="#_ftnref1" name="_ftn1"></a></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Abstract </strong>: Based on the social life of things theory and a qualitative study conducted among 28 participants, we identify four disposition routes that occur when a consumer wants to give or sell his possessions on second-hand marketplaces (identity-based, mechanical, insecure, and opportunistic), that depends on psychological, material and environmental criteria. We highlight the fact that disposition is now becoming a rationalized and routine process rather than a dispossession one, in which individuals become distributors and opportunists.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Résumé</strong> : Ethnography is a qualitative methodology used for a long time in anthropology and sociology. Since the introduction of market-oriented ethnography in the Journal of Marketing Research (Arnould Wallendorf, 1994), naturalistic inquiry has met a great success in consumer research. This paper aims to bring a reflection on ethnographical data collection process in hazardous contexts. Indeed, some research fields are more arduous to study. The question we try to answer is: how to collect ethnographic data in unfavourable contexts? To answer this question, the ethnographic method is presented first, as well as applications in consumer reserach. Secondly, methodology is then presented. Difficulties to collect data in trouble waters are adressed.. Finally, the paper provides recommendations to conduct naturalistic inquiry in this particular context.</p>

TL;DR: With Russ, one can expect an eclectic mix of ideas and influences, which may at times feel like a beautiful dance between the familiar and the unexplored, or the sacred and profane. And more than anything else, kindness.</p>
